May 18, 2012 Smarties Newsletter

I cannot believe this is my last newsletter of the year. I have had a truly wonderful year with your precious babies. I love every one of them. I see each child for the person they have been raised to be and for the person they are to become. Every one of these children will be great assets to our community. I count it a privilege to have been a part of their lives. Thank you for trusting me as your partner.

In Math we have taken our final quarterly exam and EVERY single child made an A on it!!! That is great news! Especially coming after such a hard Quarter 3!!! For the last few days we will play games, do problem solving activities and math stations.

In Reading we are finished with reading groups, assessments, and are practicing reading for longer periods of time in preparation for second grade. Please check out these websites as resources for you this summer. Please believe me when I tell you that getting better at reading isn’t something magical your child’s second grade teacher will do. Your child’s kindergarten teacher and I have given them ALL the tools to know how to read. What is takes now is practice. Just like you take your child to baseball practice to get them better at hitting or catching; just like you take your child to dance class to get them better at dancing; just like you take your child to art class to foster the love of art and grow as an artist; all you have to do is make an appointed time for reading daily to make them stronger readers. 20 minutes daily of real, uninterrupted reading will prepare them in ways I cannot tell you.

I am also attaching the second grade word list your child will need to master by the end of second grade and a packet of activities that will help you help your child be successful in second grade.

We are excited about Field Day on Monday! Please put sunscreen on your child as they are dressing…studies have shown that it takes 20-30 minutes for the sunscreen to start working. A visor, hat and/or sunglasses are welcome but please know that I will not carry anything for anyone. If they lose those items there is nothing I can do to help. Please NO Flip Flops! They are so dangerous and almost every year someone breaks a flip flop and then can’t play and participate in the fun activities! PLEASE WEAR TENNIS SHOES!

We are having our Welcome to Summer party on Tuesday at 11:00.

11-11:30 Read the paper they wrote about a friend in the class aloud and give it to them

11:30-12 Present RIF medals and certificates

12-12:30 Pizza lunch in the classroom (If your child doesn’t like pizza, please pack a sack lunch. The party will be hosted by the cafeteria so their lunch account will be charged on that day if they participate. If they bring a sack lunch the account will not be charged.)

12:30-1:30 Classroom kickball game and snow cones!

Our last day of school I have always had a water fight with the kids. I look forward to it every year and the kids remember it always. Please have your child bring a small spray water bottle (found in the gardening section of Wal-mart, Meijer, etc) with their name on it so they can participate. You can start bringing them in on Monday. If you want to send in an extra or two just in case some forget that would be great and I’ll make sure they get back to you.

Again, I have loved every moment of this year and hope you all enjoy a safe and happy summer!
